BAKERY PRICING GUIDE

How many servings are in a wedding cake tier?

For a roughly 4-inch-tall tier cut into 1 × 2-inch wedding portions, an 8-inch round tier has about 22–25 planning portions under the area method below. An 8-inch square tier has about 28–32. These are estimates, not a promised yield: confirm the actual cutting pattern, tier height, and slice size with the baker or venue.

Wedding cake serving chart

Approximate portions for tiers about 4 inches tall and slices with a 1 × 2-inch footprint. The lower figure reserves 10% of top area for irregular cuts; the upper figure is the geometric area limit, rounded down. Confirm the actual cutting plan before promising servings.

For round tiers, area = π × (width ÷ 2)². For square tiers, area = width². Divide by 2 square inches per portion; multiply area by 0.9 before dividing for the lower planning figure. Round down to whole portions.

Define the portion before counting guests

This chart assumes each slice has a 1 × 2-inch footprint and comes from a tier about 4 inches tall. A 2 × 2-inch party slice has twice the footprint, so it provides roughly half as many portions from the same tier. A shorter tier may need a different serving agreement.

Use the chart as a planning range

Calculate top-end portions as whole square inches of cake top divided by 2 square inches per slice, rounded down. The lower end reserves 10% of area for irregular cuts and handling. A round tier uses π × radius²; a square tier uses side². This geometric range does not model a particular cutting guide and cannot guarantee the slice count.

Add tiers without counting display cake twice

For example, 6-, 8-, and 10-inch round tiers give ranges of 12–14, 22–25, and 35–39 portions, or 69–78 in total if all three are served at this size. If the top tier is kept for the couple, plan on 57–64 portions from the 8- and 10-inch tiers instead.

Check the actual service plan

Ask who will cut the cake, whether a tier is saved, whether kitchen portions or a sheet cake supplement the display cake, and whether every guest needs a slice. Do not promise the upper number without a cutting plan that supports it.

Turn a serving target into a quote

Once the baker confirms the tier sizes and promised servings, price the full design, decoration, delivery, and setup. The serving count belongs in the wedding cake quote, but a serving chart is not a price list.
